Seven Things the Lord Hates

I know, I know God is Love. But did you know that there are seven things mentioned in the bible that God hates. The bible says, “we are to abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good” (Roman 12:9).

The Bible says, “these are six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him”(Proverbs 6:16-19):

A Proud Look

A person that looks down on others. This comes from a proud heart where thoughts of superiority reign. A proud heart exalts himself before God and was the cause of Satan’s downfall. The bible says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6).

Lying Tongue

There is much in the bible regarding lying. Although many of us do not see lying as a major sin, be mindful as it is on God’s top seven list of things he hates. Lying is a cunning sin, it can be done overtly or covertly. It can be things that were said as well as things that were not said. It could be our lifestyle and what we present to the world.

The bible says, “life and death is in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21). The scripture says, “But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgement. “A truthful witness saves lives, but one who breathes out lies is deceitful”(Proverbs 14:25).

Hands that Kill the Innocent

Yes, there is the obvious where innocent blood is shed I through physical murder or abortion. But I would like to bring to your attention another area in regard to shedding innocent blood. It begins in our heart with anger and insulting speech.

The bible says, “you have heard that it was said to those of old ” You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgement; 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgement; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, “You fool! will be liable to hell fire” (Matthew 5:22).

Heart Devising Wicked Plans

Did you ever know a person who was constantly devising wickedness in their mind? The bible says, “the heart is deceitful above all things, who can understand it “(Jeremiah 17:9). The fallen human mind is capable of all kinds of atrocities through thoughts and imaginations. Many times, when I listen to the news, I find myself saying why would they do that? The bible also says “The wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thought of his heart was only evil continually” (Genesis 6:5).

Feet Swift in Running to Evil

Jesus warns us in the bible that our thoughts become actions. Many time we would shrug off our wrongdoing by calling it being mischievous. However, even if the wrongdoing is considered a joke and is hurtful and/or harmful in any way this qualifies. Wrongdoing would also include such things as damage, injury, discord, evil, destruction. The bible says, as he thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:6). Dwelling on evil thought will cause us to swiftly run towards evil.

False Witness Pouring out Lies

What is a lying false witness? Speaking falsely in any matter, lying and devising a way to deceive or speaking unjustly against another with the intent to tarnish a person’s reputation. Bearing false witness is number nine of the Ten Commandments.

In a society where slander is commonplace particularly on the social media forum. We as Christians must be careful not to find ourselves bearing false witness aka slandering. According to proverbs 25:18, “A man who bears false witness against his neighbor is like a war club, a sword or a sharp arrow”.

Sowing Discord

The bible says, “God is not the author of confusion” (1 Corinthian 14:33) so sowing discord goes against the very nature of God.

“The beginning of strife is like letting out water, so abandon the quarrel before it breaks out” (Proverbs 17:14). If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men (Roman 12:18). Sowers of discord, sow the seeds of bitterness, anger, distrust and hatred into the ground of other people hearts these actions are what the bible calls the works of the flesh.

How to Avoid These Things

So what is the antidote to help keep you from falling in the trap of the deadly seven. The Bible says the following:

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (Proverbs 4:23).

“Let not mercy and truth forsake you. “Bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart, and so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man” (Proverbs 3:3:4).

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouth, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen” (Ephesian 4:29)

“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” (Psalm 119:16). So I encourage you to store the word up in your heart as if it were a treasure most valuable.
